It is summer here in Dubai (I’ve relocated, for those of you who missed that news). Here it’s like summer on another level and I have a love-hate relationship with it at the moment. It heralds in sweltering weather, sweaty mornings, and sticky afternoons, but it also ushers in more outdoor activities, relatable summer music jams, cold sweet treats, and – best of all – new summer style trends!
Recently I’ve had a bigger focus on shoes. I’ve given my sneakers a temporary break and I decided to give the more preppy summer style a shot, especially with my footwear.
My favourite style items as of late are:
Call them what you want, but boat shoes are a win for any man looking to be stylish during summer. These rubber-soled must-haves are best worn with shorts but can also be worn with slim leg chino’s. Avoid ones with bulky bright coloured soles.
You can buy a pair from H&M, Timberland, Sebago and even Rockport.
Moccasins/Loafers/Driving Shoes are back with a bang and it’s undeniable how versatile they are – wear them for a casual look or take it up a notch and complete your formal attire with a pair. These shoes are lightweight and very comfortable to wear. For maximum versatility, I suggest you buy them in black, brown, tan or a lighter neutral colour.
Buy your pair at Topman, H&M, Kurt Geiger, Mango Man, Tods or Zara.
Now listen, let’s be honest here. Sandals are a great look, only if your feet are decent looking and not offensive to the eye. Remember, people notice your shoes first when they look at your style. The best leather sandals have a touch of ‘gladiator’ about them. Just make sure the straps are not too busy and that the colour is solid throughout. Black leather ones are understated and effortlessly cool but brown and khaki colours go with everything. Always keep in mind that sandals should be simple and not complicated.
Shop at Topman, Asos, Mr Price, Aldo or even Mango Man.
Cotton Polo Shirts
Polo shirts are perfect to wear all year round but in summer, it is a must have style item for me. It gives off a sophisticated casual look and it goes with everything. They are also perfect for beach days, weekends and even a night out on the town thanks to the collar.
I suggest you go for neutral colours with no prints. It should also be well-fitted and the sleeves should stop mid-bicep of each arm.
Best buys are at H&M and River Island.
Now to complete the preppy summer look I’m going for, accessories are good to have. I think that only three main items are needed and those are:
- A pair of sunglasses (that actually suit your face)
- A woven belt
- And a Duffle bag
