We attended the Channel O Music Awards that took place on the 17th of November at the Walter Sisulu Square in Soweto, South Africa that was hosted by the beautiful Bonang Matheba alongside Nigeria’s Ice Prince.
A star-studded line up of performers included Hip Hop heavyweight Khuli Chana, Botswana’s Zeus, Nigeria’s Ice Prince & Davido and Kenyan “Fresh All Day” newcomers Camp Mulla. Ghana’s Manifest also geared up to showcase his tongue twisting talent to the continent.
But no celebration of African music would be complete without some House Music in the mix. Black Motion, Mi Casa, DJ Zinhle and the first lady of SA house, Bucie, all took to the stage and brought the house down.
The awards were dominated by Nigeria who walked away with 50% of the evenings awards with Nigerian superstar D’Banj, scooping up the Most Gifted Male Video and the Most Gifted Video of the Year Awards. This confirmed the current stranglehold Nigeria have on the African music scene.
The South African contingent who also bagged awards on the evening included DJ Cleo, Cashtime Fam, Ees & Mandoza for their collaboration on “Ayoba” and Zahara. They represented us well.
South African music veteran Oskido was the recipient of the 2012 Special Recognition Award.
Finally, adding their rousing, emotional magic to the awards was the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir – while capping off a superb night’s entertainment was a performance by Oskido.
